Statement from Mayor Joseph M. DiBella

Land Acquisition Update

The governing body has made a unilateral commitment to the preservation of open space and farmland in an effort to slow the rate, of residential development and continued sprawl. The Township has contract agreements to preserve in excess of 1,000 acres of farmland. Additionally, we have purchased hundreds of acres of open space for passive and recreational use. This ensures that this land will NEVER be developed for residential homes.

A centerpiece of this open space preservation plan has been the acquisition of two large parcels, commonly referred to as the Harms and Pinnacle properties. These two contiguous tracts represent 300 acres of land.  The tracts are centrally located in the heart of the Township, between Rt. 9 and Interstate 195. This is the largest block of undeveloped land in the community, and it is vital to our preservation efforts.

The township has earmarked in excess of $15 million to purchase and preserve this land. This will preserve the land forever. The governing body and I believe this is a valuable and wise investment. The facts show the cost of residential development continues to overwhelm our community.  Our investment will yield great rewards well into the future.

Recent press accounts inaccurately stated the township’s short range plans for the tract. It was reported that a multi-million dollar recreational center was planned thus, creating the impression that such a venue was imminent. This is not the case. More than a year ago, the Township discussed possible long range plans. These plans may include a recreational venue for citizens of all ages.

The fact of the matter is that there are no immediate plans or specifications to create such a venue at this time.

The Township continues to deal with difficult economic times. Recent cuts in spending were necessary to ensure we did not overwhelm the community with a large tax increase. We have reduced the township work force and cut line-item spending by 38% from last year.  Belt tightening such as this was necessary.  Discussions about a multi-million dollar recreational center are premature at this time.

A combination of private sponsorship in concert with state and county grant money could be used to fund such venues in the future.

The Township does not need the property for municipal purposes.  We plan to ensure it is preserved for eternity as the hallmark of open space preservation for generations.  Acquisition costs and passive usage are immediately planned for at this time.
